Equality and Diversity

Equality and Diversity

We believe diversity is great for Bournemouth, and we have commitments to equal opportunities.

Diversity allows us to take a wider and more positive outlook, valuing differences between people and understanding the positive benefits for the Council of employing a diverse range of talented people.

Our positive approach to diversity supports us to select the best person for the job based on merit alone and free from bias on the grounds of factors such as age, disability, gender or race that are not relevant to the person's ability to do the job.

This is supported by our Equality & Diversity strategy Better for All

The Equality Act 2010 protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes equal opportunities.

Our Corporate Equality and Diversity Policy explains our equality and diversity commitments.

The Equality Framework for Local Government helps us improve equal opportunities.

Diversity Monitoring

We are very proud of who we are, and our understanding of the communities we represent.

Diversity monitoring usually comes in the form of a survey or feedback form. We use diversity monitoring to get information about staff and service users and Bournemouth residents. You may be interested to see our 2017 "This is who we are"

Employee information

We have to get information about how Bournemouth employees are recruited, trained and supported, as well as how many of them are taken on and what for.

Why we need to know

The Government’s Equality Legislation means we have to ask these questions.

Your information helps us find similarities and differences in Bournemouth’s communities. We want to understand residents’ priorities to help us make important decisions. We can identify problems linked to the following things and work towards fixing them:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Race - this includes ethnic or national origins, colour or nationality
  • Gender
  • Gender Reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Religion
  • Sexual orientation

We can also see any discrimination, or policies that make life difficult for any of Bournemouth’s communities and work towards ending them.
